A portfolio of images taken on and around Lake Kerkini in northern Greece in May 2022 . This is an artificial lake with a maximum length of 17 km and width of 5 km. It was created originally in 1932 to eliminate marshland which was a source of malaria and to provide irrigation and flood control for the surrounding area.
A riparian forest at its northern end is a nesting ground for large numbers of water birds, notably cormorants, pelicans, herons and spoonbills. The mountain ridge behind it forms part of the border with Bulgaria. It is a National Park and Nature Reserve maintained under the Ramsar Convention for Wetlands of International Importance.
I returned there in January 2025, to focus particularly on the Dalmatian pelicans which are at their best at that time of the year. The images from that visit have their own gallery.
