Holuhraun

The Holuhraun lava field lies just south of Askja. This image looks across from it towards the Krepputunguhraun lava field and the mountain range of Lindafjoll. The lava in the foreground was from the huge eruption here between August 2014 and February 2015. The various streams in these lava fields, melt water from the Vatnajökull icecap, merge into the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, to flow eventually over the Selfoss and Detifoss waterfalls 100 km to the north.
